For new starters

Your first day, sorted before you get there.

You have signed. That was the hard part. This is everything else: your details, your contract in plain English, your logins, your van, your kit and your first morning.

Your link arrives by email the moment your contract is signed. There is no password to remember.

You are joining a team of 20, running 13 vehicles across four trades. Australian Small Business Champion Awards: Finalist 2025, Finalist 2026, Winner 2026.

Most trades onboarding is a folder of PDFs.

Most trade businesses are a phone number and a ute. We are building something else: a company where the systems are so good that the tradesman on the tools can just do great work, get paid properly, and go home on time.

That is why there is a portal instead of a folder of PDFs. It is why your timesheet is on your phone and not a paper docket. It is why your van has a stock list instead of a guess. Your job is the work in front of the customer. Everything behind that is ours to make easy.

Three steps, and none of them are chasing paperwork.

Nothing here needs a printer, a scanner or a trip into the office. It runs on the phone in your pocket.

  1. Sign, and the link arrives

Your portal link comes in the same email as your signed contract. One tap, straight in. No account to create, no password to forget.

  2. Work through it, in your own time

Thirteen stages, most under ten minutes. It saves where you left off, so do it in one sitting on the couch or in ten goes on the van seat. Six short checks along the way, so we know the safety content was read and not scrolled past.

  3. Turn up ready

By the time you finish, payroll has you, HR has your logins requested, your licences are filed with expiry reminders set, and you know your start time, the address and who to ask for.

Every stage, and what it is actually for.

No filler stages. Everything marked required is something payroll or safety genuinely needs.

Meet Jess, your guide through the portal

Jess, Admin & Onboarding

“If anything is unclear, there is a flag this button on every page. It comes to me. Use it.”

Jess walks you through from stage three onward. Her answers are written, not generated. Every line she says was authored by a person and checked, because an AI improvising an answer about your overtime entitlements is not a feature, it is a liability. The details you enter go to three places and nowhere else: payroll, your employee file in the company drive, and HR.

What you have by the time you walk in.

The point of doing it in advance is that day one is about the work, not about forms.

  • Your payroll file, created from what you typed. Nobody re-keys it, so nobody mistypes it.
  • Your logins requested with HR. ServiceTitan and your company email, built off your own details.
  • Your licences filed, with expiry reminders set. You get told before one lapses, not after.
  • Your van’s tool and stock list reviewed. Anything you are short of is known before day one, not day three.
  • Your uniform sizes in. Shirts, pants and jackets are supplied. Steel-capped boots are yours to bring.
  • Your first morning, in writing. Date, time, address and the name of the person to ask for.

Straight answers.

If yours is not here, the flag this button on any portal page reaches Jess directly.

How long does the whole thing take?

Thirteen stages, most under ten minutes each, and about an hour and a half all up. You do not have to do it in one sitting. It saves as you go and puts you back where you were.

Do I need to create an account or remember a password?

No. The link emailed to you signs you in. If you lose it, ask for another one and a fresh link is sent to the same address.

What should I have handy before I start?

Your driver’s licence, front and back. Your trade licence if your role holds one, plus your white card and any other tickets. Your tax file number, your BSB and account number, and your super fund details if you are keeping your existing fund. You photograph the licences and the portal reads the details off the image, so you are checking fields rather than typing them.

Is my tax file number safe in there?

It is encrypted, written straight to payroll, never emailed and never shown again. Your information goes to three places and nowhere else: our payroll system, your employee file in our secure company drive, and HR. You can ask to see or correct anything we hold on you at any time by emailing HR@yourlocaltradesman.com.au.

What are the points for?

1,800 across the thirteen stages. Partly so you can see how far through you are, and partly because six of the stages carry a short comprehension check. The safety stage is the one that matters: it is worth the most, and it is there so nobody can scroll past it and later say they were never told.

I uploaded photos of my licences. Do I still bring the cards?

Yes. Clause 3 of your contract requires the physical licences to be sighted in person before you commence. The photos get the paperwork done ahead of time. We still need to see the cards on day one.

What if something in it is wrong, or just annoying?

Say so. There is a flag this button on every page and the last stage asks you outright what was confusing. The first person to say a process is stupid is usually the newest one, because they are the only one who can still see it. That is genuinely how half the systems here got built.

Something could stop me starting on time. Do I say now or later?

Now. A notice period, a licence still processing, childcare, anything. The last stage asks the question directly. Tell us early and we work around it. Tell us late and we cannot.

the tradies you can trust.

Ready when you are.

If your contract is signed, your link is already in your inbox. Search your personal email for Your Local Tradesman. If it is not there, or you have not got to the contract yet, leave your details and Jess will sort it.
